Discover castles in Slovakia
Castles are an integral part of Slovak history. They offer visitors unique experiences in the form of unique and rare architecture, artistic styles and historical collections. They are also a "picture" of life in the Middle Ages. Many castles host cultural, experiential and historical events. The castles were built mainly for defense against the raids of enemies and for the protection of trade routes. They also served as residences of monarchs and nobility in the Middle Ages. Many castles were built on the sites of older Slavic fortified settlements. Many castles have been preserved to this day. Only ruins remain of some castles and unfortunately some have disappeared. There were several reasons of their demise. For example, some were abandoned by their owners who moved to mansions, some were destroyed in battles. Nevertheless, they are a popular destination for tourists who get to know the history and nature of country. Civil associations, non-profit organizations, foundations, volunteers and municipalities are mainly trying to restore the castle ruins.
