Historical railways in Slovakia
The original purpose of most forest railways was to transport wood in mountainous areas. The construction of forest railways in a mountainous environment required exceptional technical solutions. Forest railways were built mainly at the beginning of the 20th century. In the first half of the 20th century there were approximately 40 such railways in Slovakia. Some have been preserved to this day and are still in use as a tourist attraction. Some railways were created in the 1950s and 1960s as recreational railways and were also used for the education of young railwaymans, of which only one in city of Košice has been preserved.
