The ruins of Spiš Castle in eastern Slovakia is one of the largest castle sites in Central Europe. The castle is situated above the town of Spišské Podhradie and the village of Žehra, in the region known as Spiš. Spiš Castle has one of the largest ensembles of 13th and 14th century military, political and religious buildings in eastern Europe, and its Romanesque and Gothic architecture has remained remarkably intact. In 1993, the Spiš Castle was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
