The first climb was made by a local shoe manufacturer and amateur miner Štefan Fábry around 1760-1790, but the first recorded ascent was made by the English traveler Robert Townson with a guide on August 16, 1793. He measured the altitude almost exactly - 2633 m. The first winter ascent was made in 1891. In the past it was also called "Grandfather". Before the 19th century, it was considered the highest peak in the High Tatras and in Slovakia, too.
There is also an observatory at the top of the Lomnica Peak, which is the workplace of the Astronomical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The observatory was built between 1957 and 1962. It is the highest altitude observatory in Slovakia.
