The region borders on Bratislava Region (Bratislavský kraj), Trenčín Region (Trenčiansky kraj), Nitra Region (Nitriansky kraj) and three states - Austria, Czech Republic and Hungary.
West and north-west area of region is covered by Zahorska lowland (Záhorská nížina). Middle and south are is covered by Danubian Lowland (Podunajská nížina). Zahorska lowland and Danubian Lowland are divided by Little Carpathians (Malé Karpaty) mountains. Part of Považský Inovec mountains range extends into the region's territory in it's north-eastern area.
