Banská Bystrica Region (in Slovak Banskobystrický kraj) is the largest in Slovakia by area, it has an area of ​​9,454.01 km2. The capital of the region is city of Banská Bystrica, according to the population the fifth largest city in Slovakia. Banská Bystrica Region borders on Nitra Region (Nitriansky kraj), Trenčín Region (Trenčiansky kraj), Žilina Region (Žilinský kraj), Prešov Region (Prešovský kraj) and Košice Region (Košický kraj), on Hungary in south. The territory of the region has a mountainous and foothill character, a small part has lowland character in the south. Territory of region is covered by mountains - Low Tatras (Nízke Tatry), Great Fatra (Veľká Fatra), Kremnica Mountains (Kremnické vrchy), Štiavnica Mountains (Štiavnické vrchy), Vepor Mountains (Veporské vrchy), Stolica Mountains (Stolické vrchy), Javorie, Ostrôžky, Cerova highlands (Cerová vrchovina).  South-slovak basin (Juhoslovenská kotlina) and mountain range Cerova highlands (Cerová vrchovina) covers south of region.   The region extends 4 national parks - Low Tatras National Park (Národný park Nízke Tatry), Veľká Fatra National Park (Národný park Veľká Fatra), Muránska planina National Park (Národný park Muránska planina), Slovak Paradise National Park (Národný park Slovenský raj).

Bratislava Region (in Slovak Bratislavský kraj) is the smallest region in Slovakia by area, it has an area of ​​2,052.62 km2. The capital of the region is city Bratislava - capital of Slovak Republic, according to the population is the region with largest population in Slovakia. Bratislava Region is located in western Slovakia, borders on Austria, Hungary and Trnava Region (Trnavský kraj). The land is made up of Zahorska lowland (Záhorská nížina) in the west, Little Carpathians (Malé Karpaty) mountains stretches from the south-west to the north-east, and the eastern and south-eastern part covers Danubian Lowland (Podunajská nížina).

Košice Region (in Slovak Košický kraj) is the fourth largest region in Slovakia by area, it has area of ​​6,754.32 km2. The capital of the region is city Košice, according to the population the second largest city in Slovakia. Western part of the region has mountain and foothill character. There are mountains Slovak Ore Mountains (Slovenske rudohorie) - Volovské Mountains (Volovské vrchy), Slovak Karst (Slovenský kras), Slovak Paradise (Slovenský raj), Rožňavská valley (Rožňavská dolina).  From the north to the south stretches the mountain Slanec Hills (Slanské vrchy) , there extends also Revúcka highlands (Revúcka vrchovina) and Black Mountain (Čierna hora). The eastern part of the region has a predominantly lowland nature, for the most part it is covered by Eastern Slovak Lowland (Východoslovenská nížina). There are two national parks - Slovak Paradise National Park (Národný park Slovenský raj) and Slovak Karst National Park (Národný park Slovenský kras) in Košice region.

Nitra Region (in Slovak Nitriansky kraj) is the fifth largest region in Slovakia by area, with an area of ​​6,343.73 km2. The capital of the region is city Nitra, according to the population the sixth largest city in Slovakia. Nitra Region borders on  Trnava Region (Trnavský kraj) in the west, Trenčín Region (Trenčiansky kraj) in the north and Banská Bystrica Region (Banskobystrický kraj) in the east. The Region’s relief topography predominately consists of plains and lowlands broken by mountainous areas. The Tríbeč Mountains stretch along the north of the region, while the northeast is bordered by the Štiavnica Mountains (Štiavnické vrchy) and part of the Pohronský Inovec mountains. The largest part of the south-east and southern part of the region is covered by quality agricultural land of the Danubian Lowland (Podunajská nížina) with part of Rye Island (Žitný ostrov). Rye Island (Žitný ostrov) is the largest river island in Europe with rich groundwater reserves created between the main flows of the Danube river and the Little Danube (arm of Danube river).

Prešov Region (in Slovak Prešovský kraj) is the second largest region in Slovakia by area, it has an area of 8,972.89 km2. The capital of the region is city Prešov, according to the population the third largest city in Slovakia. Region is situated in the west - east. It fills the northeastern part of Slovakia (it is the eastern regions of Slovakia). Region has common borders with two states, Poland, Ukraine and three Slovak Regions -  Košice Region (Košický kraj), Banská Bystrica Region (Banskobystrický kraj) and Žilina Region (Žilinský kraj). The territory of the region has mostly mountainous character. The region covers the subdivisions of mountains - High Tatras (Vysoké Tatry) and Belianske Tatras (Belianske Tatry) The territory also covers mountains and highlands - Šariš highland, Ľubovnianska highlands (Ľubovnianska vrchovina), Čergov, Ondavská Highlands (Ondavská vrchovina), Slanské Hills (Slanské vrchy), Pieniny, Levoča Mountains (Levočské vrchy), Laborec Highlands (Laborecká vrchovina), Bukovec Mountains (Bukovské vrchy), Vihorlat Mountains (Vihorlatské vrchy). Part of the Eastern Slovak Lowland (Východoslovenská nížina) extends here. There are national parks -  Low Tatras National Park (Národný park Nízke Tatry), Poloniny National Park (Národný park Poloniny), Slovak Paradise National Park (Národný park Slovenský raj), Pieniny National Park (Pieninský národný park) in Prešov Region. There extends also Tatra National park (Tatranský národný park) on the territory of region.

Trenčín Region (in Slovak Trenčiansky kraj) is the sixth largest region in Slovakia by area, with an area of ​​4,501.80 km2. The capital of the region is city Trenčín, according to the population the eight largest city in Slovakia. The region borders on Žilina Region in the north-east and east, Banská Bystrica Region in the south-east, Nitra Region in the south, Trnava Region in the south and south-west and Czech Republic in north-west. Region has broken relief, the south is like a hill, while the north is mountainous. The White Carpathians and Small Carpathians Mountains - a part of well-known Carpathians mountain range – are dominant features of region´s landscape. There are several mountain ranges in the region - a small part of the Little Carpathians in the south-west, White Carpathians in the north-west, Súľov Mountains (Súľovské vrchy)  in the north-west, Maple Mountains in the north, Strážov Mountains in the centre, Považský Inovec in the south, Vtáčnik in the south-east and Žiar in the east. Small parts of Little Fatra and of the Kremnica Mountains also stretch to the region. The Danubian Lowland reaches the region to Nové Mesto nad Váhom and Partizánske city areas.

Trnava Region  (in Slovak Trnavský kraj) is the seventh largest region in Slovakia by area, it has an area of ​​4,146.30 km2. The capital of the region is city Trnava, according to the population the seventh largest city in Slovakia. The region borders on Bratislava Region (Bratislavský kraj), Trenčín Region (Trenčiansky kraj), Nitra Region (Nitriansky kraj) and three states -  Austria, Czech Republic and Hungary. West and north-west area of region is covered by Zahorska lowland (Záhorská nížina). Middle and south are is covered by Danubian Lowland (Podunajská nížina). Zahorska lowland and Danubian Lowland are divided by Little Carpathians (Malé Karpaty) mountains. Part of Považský Inovec mountains range extends into the region's territory in it's north-eastern area.

Žilina Region (in Slovak Žilinský kraj) is the third largest region in Slovakia by area, with an area of ​​6,808.52 km2. The capital of the region is city Žilina, according to the population the fourth largest city in Slovakia. Region borders Czech Republic in north-west,  Poland in north, Prešov Region in the east, Banská Bystrica Region in the south, Trenčín Region in the south-west. The whole area is mountainous, belonging to the Western Carpathians. River Váh devides area on 2 parts. North part with mountains High Tatras (Vysoké Tatry), Western Tatras (Západné Tatry), Skorušina Hills (Skorušinské vrchy), Orava Beskids (Oravské Beskydy), Orava Magura (Oravská Magura), Oravská vrchovina, Choč Mountains (Chočské vrchy), Krivánska Fatra, Kysuce Beskids (Kysucké Beskydy), Kysuce highlands (Kysucká vrchovina) a Maple Mountains (Javorníky). South part with mountains Low Tatras (Nízke Tatry), Great Fatra (Veľká Fatra), Lúčanská Fatra, Strážov Mountains (Strážovské vrchy). There are national parks Tatra National Park (Tatranský národný park), Low Tatras National Park (Národný park Nízke Tatry), Great Fatra National Park (Národný park Veľká Fatra), Little Fatra National Park (Národný park Malá Fatra) in Žilina region.
